India’s S Jaishankar Talks About the Future of Asia and the World in New York

New York [US], September 25: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spoke about the importance of the relationship between India and China in shaping the future of Asia and the world. He delivered his speech at the Asia Society Policy Institute in New York on Tuesday.

Asia Leading Change

Jaishankar emphasized that Asia is at the forefront of global change, with India playing a significant role. He stated, “Asia is very much at the cutting edge of that change. Within Asia, India is part of leading that change.”

India’s Rise Amidst Volatility

He highlighted that India must prepare to rise in a world full of unpredictability. “India which is rising, has to prepare to rise amidst volatility and unpredictability,” he said.

Three Key Words

Jaishankar used three words to describe the changing world:

  • Rebalancing: He noted that Asia is crucial to this process, with many Asian economies rising significantly in recent decades.
  • Multipolar: This term reflects the increasing number of independent decision-making centers in the world, shifting international politics towards finding common ground.
  • Plurilateralism: Although he called it an “ugly word,” Jaishankar explained that it describes a world beyond bilateral relations, where countries form groups based on shared interests.

He concluded by saying, “I think this is the latest step in the growth of that platform now rebalancing multipolar plurilateralism.”
