The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has informed the International Cricket Council (ICC) that the Indian cricket team will not travel to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy scheduled for next year. The decision follows advice from the Indian central government.
The tournament, featuring eight teams, is set to take place from February 19 to March 9. Due to India's decision, the ICC and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) must consider alternative plans, potentially involving a hybrid model where India plays its matches at a different venue. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Sri Lanka are potential locations for India's matches.
PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has expressed opposition to the hybrid model, emphasizing previous cooperative gestures, such as Pakistan's participation in the ICC Cricket World Cup in India. Naqvi insists on written communication from BCCI regarding any objections, which would be shared with the Pakistani government.
India and Pakistan have not played a bilateral series since 2012-13, and India last visited Pakistan in 2008 for the Asia Cup. The two teams now primarily meet in ICC tournaments and Asia Cups.
The ICC has yet to announce the schedule and ticketing details for the Champions Trophy, and a planned schedule announcement event in Lahore may be postponed due to these developments.
