Indian Men’s Archery Team Aims for Olympic Medal in Paris

The Indian men’s archery team, consisting of Dhiraj Bommadevara, Tarundeep Rai, and Pravin Jadhav, is set to compete in the quarterfinals of the Paris Olympics on Monday. They hope to end India’s long wait for an Olympic medal in archery.

India has seen success in archery at the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, winning 19 and 8 medals respectively, but an Olympic medal has remained elusive. The team will face either Colombia or Turkiye in the quarterfinals at 6:31 PM, with medal rounds taking place later in the day.

In the ranking round, the Indian team secured a third-place finish with 2013 points, directly qualifying for the quarterfinals. South Korea topped the rankings with 2049 points, followed by France with 2025 points. China finished fourth with 1998 points, and all four teams have directly qualified for the quarterfinals.

The women’s team, featuring Bhajan Kaur, Deepika Kumari, and Ankita Bhakat, also qualified for the quarterfinals by finishing fourth with 1983 points. However, they faced a disappointing defeat against the Netherlands in the quarterfinals, losing 6-0. Despite Bhajan Kaur’s efforts, the team struggled to find their rhythm.

This was Deepika Kumari’s fourth Olympic appearance, and a medal was highly anticipated given her past performances. Unfortunately, her quest for an Olympic medal continues.

A men’s team medal would be a significant achievement, especially for 40-year-old veteran Tarundeep Rai, who has been competing since the 2004 Athens Olympics. His best Olympic performance was a quarterfinal finish at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
