Indian Government Monitors Situation in Bangladesh Amid Unrest, Says S Jaishankar
New Delhi, India, August 6: Amid political unrest in Bangladesh, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar informed the Lok Sabha that the Indian government is closely monitoring the situation. He stated that there are approximately 19,000 Indian nationals in Bangladesh, including about 9,000 students, most of whom returned to India in July.
Jaishankar mentioned that Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina requested approval to come to India on short notice and arrived in Delhi on Monday evening. He noted that despite a curfew, demonstrators gathered in Dhaka on August 5, leading to Hasina’s decision to resign after meeting with security leaders.
The minister highlighted the growing violence in Bangladesh, including attacks on public buildings and infrastructure, and the targeting of minorities. He emphasized that the Indian government has been urging restraint and dialogue to resolve the situation.
Jaishankar also mentioned that the Army Chief of Bangladesh, General Waker-uz-Zaman, addressed the nation on August 5, announcing the formation of an interim government. The Indian government expects the host government to provide security for its diplomatic missions in Bangladesh.
The External Affairs Minister assured that the Indian government remains in close contact with authorities in Dhaka and is monitoring the situation, especially concerning the safety of minorities. He sought the understanding and support of the House on this sensitive issue.
