Indian Government Invites Gig Workers to Register on e-Shram Portal for Social Security Benefits
The central government of India is encouraging gig and platform workers to register on the e-Shram Portal to ensure they are covered under social security schemes. The Ministry of Labour and Employment has issued guidelines for platform aggregators to register their workers and update their data regularly.
The e-Shram Portal aims to support unorganised workers by providing them with a Universal Account Number (UAN), which grants access to key social security benefits. The portal captures details such as name, address, occupation, educational qualification, and skill type.
Union Minister of Labour and Employment Mansukh Mandaviya will chair a meeting with platform aggregators to discuss this initiative. The government has also set up a toll-free helpline (14434) to assist with registration and resolve technical issues.
Minister Mandaviya emphasized the government’s commitment to the well-being of gig and platform workers, highlighting the significance of the Code on Social Security, which defines gig and platform workers in India for the first time.
