Indian Coast Guard Boosts Security Amid Bangladesh Unrest
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has ramped up surveillance operations along the maritime boundary with Bangladesh. This move comes in response to the political turmoil in Bangladesh, where Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned on August 5 amid widespread protests.
Increased Surveillance
ICG’s aircraft, hovercraft, and other vessels are actively patrolling the maritime boundary to prevent illegal influx into India. ICG Deputy Director General Anupam Rai stated that security measures have been intensified to address potential threats.
Patrolling Key Areas
The Sunderban Creek areas are under close observation, with air cushion vessels and interceptor boats on constant patrol. Coastal surveillance radars at Haldia, Paradeep, and Gopalpur are operating 24/7 to monitor any illegal activity.
Rai mentioned, “Till now no illegal activity has been seen but we have very specifically told our ships to board all fishing boats or any vessels that are close to the Indo-Bangladesh International Maritime Border Line (IMBL) or in the creek areas.”
