Indian Athletes Compete in World Athletics U20 Championships in Peru

A 43-member Indian team will be in action during the World Athletics U20 Championships in Peru from August 28 to 31. The team includes 23 men and 20 women athletes, with India also competing in the 4x400m mixed relay race.

Key Athletes

Dipanshu Sharma, the current Asian U20 champion in men’s javelin throw, will be a key player for India. Other notable athletes include Anurag Singh Kaler (shot put), Ranvir Singh (3000m steeplechase), Harshit Kumar (hammer throw), Pavana Nagaraj (long jump), and Ekta Dey (3000m steeplechase), all of whom secured gold medals at the Asian Championships in Dubai.

Bapi Hansda will participate in the 4x400m relay and the 400m events after recovering from dengue, which caused him to miss the Asian U20 Athletics Championships in April.

Past Achievements

At the Cali U20 World Athletics Championships 2022, India secured two silver medals and one bronze. The USA topped the medal tally with 15 medals. Notably, Neeraj Chopra, the Olympic gold medalist and current world champion in javelin throw, was the first-ever Indian to secure the U20 title in 2016. Hima Das also won gold in the 400m race at the 2018 Tampere Championships.
