Indian Army and Coast Guard Rescue Over 1,000 People in Wayanad Landslides
The Indian Army has ramped up its rescue operations in Wayanad, Kerala, following devastating landslides. More than 1,000 people have been evacuated to safety, and around 70 bodies have been recovered.
Rescue Efforts
Four columns from the DSC Centre in Kannur and the 122 TA Battalion are working with the NDRF and state rescue teams. An advance party from MEG & Centre arrived to assess the need for bridge resources. Brigadier Arjun Seagan and his team are coordinating the efforts.
Additional Support
Two Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) columns, including medical teams, were airlifted from Trivandrum to Kozhikode. The Engineering Task Force from the Madras Engineering Group arrived with equipment to build a Bailey Bridge. The Indian Coast Guard is also actively engaged in rescue and relief operations.
Government Response
Union Minister George Kurian visited Wayanad to oversee relief operations and visited a relief camp. The Prime Minister’s Office announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the victims and Rs 50,000 for the injured.

The landslides have caused significant damage to houses, roads, and trees, making rescue operations challenging. Kerala is observing two days of mourning, and the national flag is flown at half-mast at the state assembly.
