Union Minister Kiren Rijiju announced that the Indian government will observe June 25 as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ to remember the 1975 Emergency imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The day will honor those who suffered during the Emergency and ensure such an event is never repeated.

Rijiju criticized the Congress Party for ‘murdering’ the Constitution in 1975 and called their current actions ‘drama.’ He emphasized the importance of protecting the Constitution given by Dr. BR Ambedkar.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah supported the decision, calling the Emergency a dark phase in Indian history. Shah noted that many people were imprisoned and the media was silenced during that time.

The government issued a notification to commemorate the contributions of those who endured the hardships of the Emergency and to recommit to preventing such abuses of power in the future.
