India to Build More Scorpene Submarines with French Help and Local Technology

India is planning to build three additional Scorpene class submarines for its Navy. These submarines will be developed in partnership with the French Naval Group and will feature combat management systems made in India by Bharat Electronics Limited.

Project Details

The Indian Navy is negotiating with Mazagaon Dockyards Limited (MDL) to construct these submarines. The project aims to achieve up to 60% indigenous content, which will be a significant step towards self-reliance in defense technology.

Key Statements

Vincent Martinot-Lagarde, Executive Vice President of the Naval Group, stated, “The heart of the submarine, which is the combat system, will be an indigenous one from Bharat Electronics Limited based on French architecture.”

He added that the project will create thousands of skilled jobs in India and prepare the industry for future maintenance and sales of these submarines.

Technological Advancements

The new submarines will feature the latest technologies, offering better combat capabilities, endurance, and stealth. The first of these submarines is expected to be ready in six years.

Strategic Importance

This initiative is part of India’s broader strategy to develop a fleet of 21 new conventional submarines and six nuclear-powered submarines. The high level of indigenous content aims to make India a hub for submarine building and exports in the region.

Future Prospects

The project is expected to be completed within this fiscal year, with the Defence Ministry aiming for a minimum of 60% indigenisation. This will help India overcome shortages and delays in submarine construction, crucial for protection against growing threats from China and Pakistan.
