India-Canada Diplomatic Tensions: MEA Criticizes PM Trudeau’s Inaction

India-Canada Diplomatic Tensions Escalate

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India has criticized the Canadian government for not taking action against anti-India elements, despite Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s claims of supporting the ‘One India’ policy. The diplomatic tensions between the two countries intensified when Canada labeled India’s High Commissioner and other diplomats as “persons of interest” in the investigation of Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s death. In response, India recalled its High Commissioner and five other diplomats from Canada.

MEA’s Concerns

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted the gap between Trudeau’s words and actions, stating that no action has been taken against those promoting separatist ideologies. Jaiswal emphasized the lack of faith in the Canadian government’s ability to ensure the safety of Indian diplomats, leading to their withdrawal.

Trudeau’s Admission

Prime Minister Trudeau admitted that Canada had not provided India with hard evidence, only intelligence, regarding Nijjar’s killing. He mentioned that India requested evidence, but Canada only had intelligence to offer.

MEA’s Response

The MEA accused Trudeau of damaging India-Canada relations with his “cavalier behaviour” and reiterated that Canada has not presented any evidence to support its allegations against India. The MEA holds Trudeau responsible for the strained relations.

Background

The tensions began when Trudeau alleged India’s involvement in Nijjar’s killing, which India denied, calling the allegations “absurd” and “motivated.” Nijjar, designated a terrorist by India’s National Investigation Agency, was killed outside a Gurdwara in Surrey last year.
