India and Australia Hold First Senior Officials' Consultation on Antarctica
The first India-Australia Senior Officials' Consultation (SOC) on Antarctica was held virtually, as announced by the Ministry of External Affairs. The Indian side was led by Paramita Tripathi, Joint Secretary of the Oceania and Indo-Pacific Divisions, while the Australian side was represented by Adam McCarthy and Sarah Storey from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
The discussions covered a wide range of issues and included representatives from the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, and the Australian Antarctic Division. The India-Australia relationship has seen significant growth, expanding into new areas of cooperation at both bilateral and global levels.
India and Australia have partnerships in energy, science, technology, and space. In a meeting last November during the G20 Summit in Brazil, Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Anthony Albanese discussed accelerating climate action and launched the India-Australia Renewable Energy Partnership. This partnership focuses on solar PV, green hydrogen, energy storage, and investment in renewable energy projects.
The leaders emphasized the importance of research, innovation, skills development, and sustainable practices in the critical minerals sector to support the global clean energy transition.
