IIT Guwahati’s LEAP Framework Revolutionizes IC Design with Machine Learning

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati have made significant advancements in Electronic Design Automation (EDA) with their new machine learning framework named ‘LEAP’. This innovative solution enhances the design process of Integrated Circuits (ICs), which are essential components in the $600 billion semiconductor industry powering modern electronic devices.

Challenges in IC Design

Designing ICs involves complex problems that traditional heuristic methods struggle to solve efficiently. These methods often balance design quality and runtime but yield less-than-ideal results.

The LEAP Framework

To address these challenges, Prof Chandan Karfa, Dr Sukanta Bhattacharjee, and their BTech students, along with Dr Animesh Basak Chowdhury from New York University, developed the LEAP framework. LEAP streamlines the technology mapping process within EDA by intelligently identifying and prioritizing the most promising configurations, reducing the number of configurations the mapping tool must consider by over 50%.

Key Benefits

Prof Chandan Karfa stated, “Our framework not only speeds up the mapping process but also improves the performance of the circuits. We have reduced the runtime of the EDA tool by 50% and achieved a 2% reduction in clock period without increasing the area required for the circuits.”

Real-World Implications

In extensive testing on 21 different designs, the LEAP framework demonstrated a 50% improvement in runtime while reducing the number of configurations checked by over 51%. This research holds real-world implications for the semiconductor industry, essential for developing electronic devices like smartphones and computers. By enhancing the IC design process, LEAP can lead to faster, more efficient electronic devices with lower energy consumption, benefiting consumers and driving innovation across various technology sectors.

The results of this promising work have been published in the ACM/IEEE International Conference on Computer-Aided Design (ICCAD 2024).
