ICC Chief Geoff Allardice Confirms Champions Trophy Will Stay in Pakistan
International Cricket Council (ICC) Chief Executive Geoff Allardice has confirmed that there are no plans to relocate the ICC Champions Trophy, which is scheduled to be held in Pakistan early next year. This announcement comes amid uncertainties about India’s participation in the event.
India has not played any cricket tournament in Pakistan since the Asia Cup in 2008 due to tense relations between the two nations. The last bilateral series between India and Pakistan was held in December 2012 in India. Since then, the two teams have only faced each other in ICC tournaments and the Asia Cup.
During a media briefing in Dubai for the Women’s T20 World Cup, Allardice stated, “No plans to relocate the Champions Trophy from Pakistan.”
Earlier this year, Rajeev Shukla, Vice-President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), mentioned that the Indian team would only travel to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy if the central government permits it. Shukla said, “In the case of the Champions Trophy, we will do whatever the Government of India will tell us to do. We send our team only when the Government of India gives us permission. So we will go according to the decision of the Indian government.”
The ICC Champions Trophy 2025, also known as the “Mini World Cup,” will feature eight elite teams, including India, Australia, New Zealand, England, South Africa, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. Pakistan had to use a hybrid strategy for hosting the Asia Cup last year, with all of India’s matches taking place in Sri Lanka. The tournament final, which India won, was held in Colombo.
Pakistan, the defending champions of the Champions Trophy, last hosted the event in 2017.
