Heavy Rainfall Closes Schools and Colleges in Karsog, Himachal Pradesh
Due to ongoing and heavy rainfall, authorities in Himachal Pradesh’s Karsog Sub-Division have declared that all schools, colleges, anganwadi centres, and vocational institutes will be closed on Wednesday, August 7, 2024.
Official Statement
In an order, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Karsog stated, “Due to continuous rainfall since last night, which has caused blockage of roads and many incidents of frequent landslides have been reported. Also, there is a forecast of heavy rainfall for the whole day on August 7, 2024. Under such circumstances, the movement of staff, school, college children, and trainees may not be safe and is required to be restricted.”
“Therefore, under Section 34 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, in order to ensure the safety and security of students, children, and staff, it is hereby ordered that all the government and private schools, colleges, anganwadi centres, and vocational institutes in Karsog Sub-Division shall remain closed on August 7, 2024. The heads of these institutions shall ensure strict compliance with the above orders as it is a matter of public safety,” the Sub-Divisional Magistrate added.

This decision comes amid an orange alert in Himachal Pradesh, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting light to moderate rainfall to continue in the state. According to data from the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), 85 roads, including two National Highways, have been closed in the state due to landslides and excessive rain. A total of 116 electricity supply schemes and 65 water supply schemes have also been disrupted in the state.
An incident of a catastrophic cloudburst occurred in the Lahaul and Spiti districts on August 1. As the rain continues to lash Shimla and other parts of Himachal Pradesh, the authorities have urged residents and tourists to take necessary precautions and stay updated on weather advisories.
