Hamad Azhar Resigns from PTI Punjab Presidency

On August 16, Hamad Azhar, the President of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Punjab chapter and a former member of the National Assembly, announced his resignation. He shared his decision on social media platform X, expressing dissatisfaction with his limited access to PTI founder Imran Khan and the lack of participation in organizational decisions in Punjab.

Azhar mentioned that many decisions were influenced by lobbying rather than merit. Despite these challenges, he did not hold a press conference or make any agreements for his departure. He also highlighted restrictions on his mobility, stating he was not allowed to meet Imran Khan while he is in Adiala Jail. However, Azhar will continue to support PTI as an activist.

Political Landscape in Pakistan

Pakistan’s political scene has been turbulent, with PTI and PML-N in a constant power struggle. PTI has seen several members leave, and Imran Khan blames the Shehbaz Sharif-led coalition government for his ouster and the resulting political instability.

Arrest of Lt-Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed

The arrest of former ISI Director General Lt-Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed has added to PTI’s controversies. Imran Khan distanced his party from this issue, calling it an internal military matter. Khan’s legal representative, Intezar Panjutha, stated that Khan had called for peaceful protests for freedom. Panjutha also mentioned that there was no political connection between Khan and Gen Faiz, and suggested setting up a judicial commission to investigate the events of May 9.

Lt-Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed, a close associate of Imran Khan, was detained by the military and faces court-martial proceedings for corruption, misuse of authority, and violating the Pakistan Army Act. He was appointed as ISI chief during Khan’s tenure and is considered the second most powerful military officer in Pakistan after the army head.
