The Greenland ice sheet is a massive body of ice, holding nearly half of all fresh water in the northern hemisphere. However, rising global temperatures are causing it to melt, leading to rising sea levels. Researchers from the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) and the University of Copenhagen’s Niels Bohr Institute have been studying the ice sheet’s movements using satellite data and artificial intelligence.

Research Findings

The study reveals that the ice sheet’s movements are closely linked to the flow of meltwater beneath it. By analyzing satellite data, researchers identified four categories of ice movement patterns. This information is crucial for improving climate models, particularly those predicting sea level rise.

The Role of Meltwater

Meltwater from the surface flows to the bottom of the ice sheet through channels known as subglacial drainage pathways. The efficiency of these channels affects the ice’s movement. Inefficient drainage increases pressure, reducing friction and causing the ice to move faster. Conversely, efficient drainage slows the ice’s movement.

Artificial Intelligence in Research

Artificial intelligence was used to analyze vast amounts of satellite data, identifying movement patterns that would be difficult to detect manually. This technology helps researchers understand how the ice sheet responds to warmer temperatures and increased meltwater, aiding in the development of future climate models.

Continuous measurements from ESA’s Sentinel-1 satellites have been used since 2016 to monitor the ice sheet’s movement under the Programme for Monitoring of the Greenland Ice Sheet (PROMICE).
