Goa Shipyard Launches India’s First Pollution Control Vessel ‘Samudra Pratap’

Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL), a leading Indian shipyard, has launched India’s first indigenously designed and built pollution control vessel named ‘Samudra Pratap’ for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG). The contract for constructing two such vessels was finalized on June 22, 2021, for Rs 583 crore.

The ship was launched by Neeta Seth in the presence of Sanjay Seth, Raksha Rajya Mantri, who was the chief guest at the ceremony. Other notable attendees included IG Bhisham Sharma, IG HK Sharma, and Brajesh Kumar Upadhyaya, Chairman and Managing Director of GSL, along with officials from the Ministry of Defence, ICG, Indian Navy, and Goa Shipyard Ltd.

‘Samudra Pratap’ is 114.5 meters long, 16.5 meters wide, and displaces 4170 tons. It will be manned by 14 officers and 115 sailors. The ship is equipped with specialized equipment for oil spill response operations, including containment, recovery, separation, and dispersal of pollutants.

The keel laying ceremony for the ship took place on November 21, 2022. Since then, GSL has made significant progress in achieving this milestone. The project, with over 60% indigenous content, has contributed to skill development and employment generation for local industries and MSMEs.

Raksha Rajya Mantri Sanjay Seth praised the efforts of the Ministry of Defence, ICG, and the industry in fulfilling the ship-building requirements indigenously. He congratulated GSL employees for achieving this critical milestone and emphasized the importance of self-reliance in defense production.

The launch of ‘Samudra Pratap’ showcases India’s shipbuilding capabilities and positions Goa Shipyard Ltd among the top Indian shipyards capable of producing advanced pollution control vessels.
