Global Chess League Announces Star Players for Second Season in London

The Global Chess League (GCL) has revealed its impressive lineup of male players for the second season, scheduled from October 3-12 at Friends House in London. The league is a collaboration between the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and Tech Mahindra.

Star Players

Joining the ranks of Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, and Viswanathan Anand are returning stars such as:

  • Arjun Erigaisi (World No. 4)
  • Nodirbek Abdusattorov (World No. 7)
  • Praggnanandhaa R (World No. 12)
  • Wei Yi (World No. 8)

Praggnanandhaa R, who was the Player of the Tournament in the first season, expressed his excitement for the upcoming season, saying, “The inaugural season was a remarkable learning experience as I got to play alongside Magnus Carlsen and other top players. I am looking forward to an exciting season with my team in this unique televised chess event. I am sure chess fans will be captivated by this exciting team chess format.”

Nodirbek Abdusattorov, a former FIDE World Rapid Champion, commented on the strong roster and challenging format, saying, “I am looking forward to another memorable outing with my team in the Global Chess League.”

League Format

The league features six teams, each consisting of six players: one Icon player, two Superstar male players, two Superstar female players, and one prodigy. Each team will play 10 matches in a double round-robin format, with the winner decided in a best-of-six board scoring system.

Sameer Pathak, CEO of the Global Chess League, expressed his excitement, stating, “These elite players are poised to deliver thrilling and unforgettable games for their teams in the league’s innovative format that incentivizes risk-taking. We are confident that these players will deliver a remarkable chess spectacle in London.”
