German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Upcoming Visit to India: A German Mohotsav

German Ambassador to India, Philipp Ackermann, announced that the second half of October will be a ‘German Mohotsav’ as German Chancellor Olaf Scholz visits India for the Inter-Governmental Consultations (IGC). Scholz will be accompanied by a large delegation, including seven to eight ministers, to New Delhi.

During this time, the Asia Pacific conference of German business will also take place, bringing high-ranking German CEOs to discuss business in India and Asia. Ackermann expressed excitement about the visit, highlighting India’s role as a gracious host.

Strengthening Defence Cooperation

The German envoy emphasized the improved military-strategic cooperation between India and Germany. India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh recently had a telephonic conversation with German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius to review ongoing defence cooperation and discuss strengthening defence-industrial collaboration.

The conversation was a precursor to the upcoming bilateral meeting during the intergovernmental consultations. The German Defence Minister will meet with India’s Raksha Mantri in Delhi to discuss various projects and enhance security cooperation.

Historical Ties and Future Prospects

In May 2022, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Berlin for the 6th Indo-German Inter-Governmental Consultations. The leaders acknowledged digital transformation as a key driver for change and signed a Joint Declaration of Intent for a Green and Sustainable Development Partnership, with Germany committing to invest at least 10 billion Euros in India by 2030.

Germany and India have shared diplomatic relations for over seven decades, focusing on multilateral cooperation and a sustainable digital economy. Chancellor Scholz’s previous visit to India in February 2023 included a high-level business delegation and discussions on enhancing cooperation in innovation and technology.
