Gautam Gambhir Becomes New Head Coach of Team India

Gautam Gambhir, a former opener and left-hand batter, has been named the new head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team. He takes over from Rahul Dravid, who led the team to the finals of major ICC events in all three formats during his tenure.

Gambhir’s Achievements

Gambhir played crucial roles in India’s victories in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 Cricket World Cup. He also captained Kolkata Knight Riders to IPL title wins in 2012 and 2014 and mentored them to another title in 2024.

Challenges Ahead

Tests

India is not at the top of the ICC Men’s Test Team Rankings but has reached the finals of the last two World Test Championships. Upcoming series against Bangladesh, New Zealand, and a challenging tour to Australia will be crucial.

ODIs

India has two major ICC events in the next four years: the Champions Trophy and the Cricket World Cup. Gambhir will need to prepare the team for these events and start the transition to a new captain and players.

T20Is

Following the T20 World Cup win, key players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja have retired from T20Is. Gambhir will oversee the transition and selection of a new captain and players for the next T20 World Cup in 2027.
