FSSAI Urges E-commerce Food Operators to Ensure Safe Practices

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) held a meeting in New Delhi to discuss food safety with e-commerce food business operators. The FSSAI emphasized the importance of selling products with a minimum shelf life of 30% or 45 days before expiry. The CEO of FSSAI warned against unsupported claims online and stressed the necessity of having a valid FSSAI license. He also highlighted the need for proper training for delivery personnel on food safety and hygiene. Additionally, he advised separating food and non-food items during delivery to prevent contamination. Over 200 participants attended the meeting both physically and virtually.

FSSAI -: FSSAI stands for the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. It is a government organization that makes sure the food we eat is safe and healthy.

E-commerce Food Operators -: E-commerce food operators are companies that sell food online, like Swiggy or Zomato. They deliver food to your home when you order it through their app or website.

Shelf Life -: Shelf life is the amount of time food can be stored before it goes bad or is not safe to eat. FSSAI wants food to have at least 30% of its shelf life left when sold.

Unsupported Claims -: Unsupported claims are statements about food that are not proven to be true. For example, saying a food item can cure a disease without any scientific proof.

FSSAI License -: An FSSAI license is a special permission that food businesses need to have to sell food legally in India. It shows that they follow safety rules.

Training Delivery Personnel -: Training delivery personnel means teaching the people who deliver food how to handle it safely. This helps make sure the food stays clean and healthy during delivery.

Separating Food and Non-Food Items -: Separating food and non-food items means keeping things like groceries and cleaning products apart during delivery. This prevents contamination and keeps the food safe to eat.
