Foxconn Employees in China Investigated for Bribery and Embezzlement

Four employees from Taiwan working at Foxconn in China are being investigated for allegedly accepting bribes and embezzling funds. This was confirmed by China’s Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO). The employees were detained in Zhengzhou, where Foxconn’s largest iPhone factory is located, for charges similar to ‘breach of trust’.

TAO spokesperson Zhu Fenglian stated that the authorities are handling the case according to the law while ensuring the suspects’ legal rights are protected. The investigation follows reports that these employees have been detained since January.

China claims Taiwan as part of its territory, while Taiwan considers itself a sovereign democracy. The accused employees are suspected of accepting bribes as non-state officials, with two also facing embezzlement charges. Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) described the case as ‘quite strange’ and noted that Foxconn reported no losses or harm to its interests.

There is speculation that the case might involve corruption by some Chinese security officials, which has affected business confidence. The MAC has urged Chinese authorities to resolve the matter promptly.
