In Lahore, Pakistan, four former employees of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), including two pilots and a stewardess, confessed to using fake degrees for appointments or promotions. This confession followed an audit revealing that 457 PIA employees were recruited with fake degrees. Initially, they denied the charges but later pleaded guilty in court.
Nazia Naheed, an air hostess from Karachi, admitted to using a fake BA degree for a promotion, leading to her termination in 2014. Mohsin Ali, a co-pilot, confessed to using a fake BA degree for his 2006 appointment, resulting in his termination in 2014. Arif Tarar, who retired in 2018 after 39 years of service, used a fake FA degree to become a data entry operator. Kashan Aijaz Dodhy, a cadet pilot, used a fake BSc degree for his 1995 appointment and was terminated in 2019.
Judge Tanveer Ahmad Sheikh informed the accused that their confessions could lead to convictions. After considering their options, they insisted on recording their confessions. The judge sentenced them to imprisonment "till rising of the court" and imposed fines.
PIA stands for Pakistan International Airlines. It is the national airline of Pakistan, similar to Air India in India.
Fake degrees are certificates that falsely claim someone has completed a course or education. It's like pretending to have passed a class when you haven't.
An audit is a careful check or review of something. In this case, it was a check to see if the employees' degrees were real or fake.
This means the person is sentenced to stay in court until the session ends for the day. It's a very short time in jail, just for the duration of the court's sitting.
Judge Tanveer Ahmad Sheikh is the person in charge of the court who decides the punishment for people who break the law.
