Former Principal Sandip Ghosh Seeks Protection Amid Kolkata Medical College Tensions
Former Principal of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, Prof (Dr) Sandip Ghosh, approached the Calcutta High Court on Friday seeking protection due to life threats. The court has instructed the State government to provide him with police protection and asked his counsel to file a separate affidavit if needed.
Ghosh resigned from his position on Monday, citing defamation on social media following the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the hospital. The Chief Justice division bench of the Calcutta High Court reviewed several PILs on the matter on Tuesday and questioned Ghosh’s appointment.
After Ghosh’s resignation, he was appointed as principal of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital, which led to protests. Amid the tensions, the new principal, Suhrita Pal, urged people to trust her and promised to address the demands of the medical students and doctors.
On August 9, a post-graduate trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The victim’s family alleged she was raped and murdered, sparking nationwide protests by doctors and medical fraternities.
