Rabi Lamichhane, who previously served as Nepal's Home Minister and is the chairman of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), has been transported to Kathmandu for questioning in an ongoing investigation into fraud and money laundering. He was flown from Pokhara to Kathmandu and taken to the District Police Range.
As Lamichhane arrived at Tribhuvan International Airport, dozens of supporters gathered, chanting slogans as police escorted him to a vehicle.
The investigation focuses on alleged embezzlement of funds from the Swarnalaxmi Cooperative in Kalimati. Lamichhane, who leads the fourth largest party in parliament, is accused of mismanaging cooperative funds during his tenure as managing director of the now-defunct Gorkha Media Network. Allegations include diverting NPR 30 million into personal accounts.
Lamichhane was arrested on October 18 by the Central Investigation Bureau and has been in detention for over 40 days. The Kathmandu District Court issued an arrest warrant against him and his associate Chhabilal Joshi. The investigation has expanded to include other cooperatives beyond Kaski, with Lamichhane being transported to Butwal and expected to be taken to Chitwan for further inquiries.
