Forest Department Installs Snap Cameras to Track Wolves in Bahraich
The Forest Department in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, has taken a significant step to monitor wolf movements by installing snap cameras in probable habitats. This initiative, launched on Sunday, aims to capture images of the wolves without any human interference, making the animals more comfortable.
Why Snap Cameras?
Sanjay Pathak, General Manager of the Forest Department, explained that the snap cameras work automatically, which prevents wolves from sensing human presence. This method helps in tracking the wolves more effectively.
Impact on Villages
More than 40 villages have been affected by wolf attacks, leading to 9 deaths and over 40 injuries. The forest department has installed three snap cameras in Sikandarpur village, around six caves believed to be wolf habitats.
Local Insights
Mohit, a villager, mentioned that a partially-abled wolf had been living in the dens for a year without attacking humans. However, as the pack grew, the wolf turned into a man-eater. Another villager reported seeing wolves in the area over the past five to ten days.
Ongoing Search
The forest department’s rigorous search operation continues to catch the remaining wolves. So far, four wolves have been captured, but the fear of attacks persists among the villagers.
