Floods in Queensland: Tragic Loss and Urgent Evacuations

In northeast Australia, heavy rains have led to flash floods, causing one death and prompting thousands to evacuate. The floods have severely impacted the North Queensland coast, particularly Ingham and Townsville. Authorities have urged residents in low-lying areas to leave immediately.

Tragic Incident in Ingham

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli confirmed the death of a woman in Ingham. She drowned when a rescue boat capsized after hitting a tree. Five others on the boat were rescued. Premier Crisafulli expressed condolences, saying, "That's a really tight-knit community, our thoughts and prayers are with the family."

Government Response

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as "heartbreaking news" and assured full support from both Queensland and Federal Governments. He stated, "The full support of the Queensland and Federal Governments is being deployed to assist with these floods."

Emergency Alerts and Safety Warnings

An emergency alert was issued in Bluewater, a suburb of Townsville, warning residents of life-threatening flooding. The Townsville Local Disaster Management Group emphasized the urgency, stating, "Water is rising fast and there will be dangerous and life-threatening flooding." Residents in the "blackzone" were advised to evacuate by midday on Sunday.

Wildlife Warning

Queensland's Department of Environment, Science and Innovation cautioned residents about crocodiles possibly appearing in unexpected areas due to the floods. They advised, "Expect crocodiles in all north and far north Queensland waterways even if there is no warning sign."
