Floods in Assam: Over 55,000 Affected in Morigaon, Minister Atul Bora Visits

Morigaon, Assam, July 4: The flood situation in Assam has worsened, affecting more than 55,000 people in the Morigaon district. According to the Morigaon District Administration, 194 villages are submerged, forcing thousands to seek shelter on embankments and roads.

Villagers' Struggles

Chandini Devi from Bhuragaon shared her ordeal, stating that her family has been living in a makeshift tent for the past four days after floodwaters entered their home. Another villager, Dipen Deka, mentioned that many have lost valuable goods and are facing numerous problems.

Minister's Visit

Assam Agriculture Minister Atul Bora visited the flood-affected areas and interacted with the displaced people. He noted that while the Brahmaputra River's water level is receding, the situation remains dire. Bora emphasized that the government is working hard to provide relief and support to the affected families.

Impact on Agriculture and Wildlife

The floods have submerged 12,963 hectares of crop area in Morigaon and nearly 40,000 hectares across the state. In Kaziranga National Park, 17 wild animals, including a rhino calf, have drowned, while 72 were rescued. The park remains heavily affected, with 173 forest camps still underwater.

Statewide Impact

Overall, the floods have affected over 16.25 lakh people across 29 districts in Assam. Rescue operations are ongoing, with multiple agencies involved in saving lives and providing aid. The government has set up 515 relief camps, sheltering over 3.86 lakh people.
