Floods in Assam: Kaziranga National Park’s Animals Rescued

Seventeen wild animals, including a rhino calf and hog deer, drowned in Kaziranga National Park due to floods, while 72 were rescued by forest authorities. According to Sonali Ghosh, Field Director of Kaziranga National Park, 32 animals are currently under treatment and 25 others have been released.

The flood situation in Assam’s Kaziranga National Park remains grim, with 173 forest camps still affected. The overall flood situation in Assam is critical, impacting over 16.25 lakh people and 11.20 lakh animals across 29 districts. Rescue teams, including the NDRF, SDRF, Fire & Emergency Services, administration, Indian army, and paramilitary forces, have rescued 8377 people so far.

Rescue Efforts

Sonali Ghosh stated, “The park authorities and forest department have rescued 55 Hog Deer, two otters (infants), two Sambar, two Scops Owls, one rhino calf, one Indian Hare, one Jungle cat, etc.”

Flood Impact

Floods in Assam have claimed 46 lives, with eight people drowning on Wednesday. Over 3.86 lakh people are taking shelter in 515 relief camps and distribution centres set up by the administration in 24 flood-hit districts.
