Eyal Zamir Appointed as New Chief of Staff of Israel Defense Forces
In Tel Aviv, Israel, Major General (res.) Eyal Zamir has been nominated to become the new Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). This announcement was made by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office. Zamir is set to replace Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, who decided to resign following the military's failures on October 7. Halevi expressed confidence in Zamir's leadership, stating, "I have known Eyal for many years, and I am sure that he will lead the IDF forward in the face of the expected challenges and wish him great success."
The appointment of Zamir requires approval from the Senior Appointments Advisory Committee and confirmation by the Cabinet. If confirmed, Zamir will officially take over on March 6. Born in Eilat, Zamir, 59, began his military career in the Armored Corps in 1984, eventually becoming a tank commander. He served as Netanyahu's military secretary from 2012 to 2015 and was the deputy chief of staff from 2018 to 2021. He also held a position as a visiting research fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.
Zamir was previously considered for the Chief of Staff role in 2018 and 2022. In 2023, he became the Director General of the Defense Ministry. He holds degrees from Tel Aviv and Haifa Universities and completed the General Management Program at Wharton University.
The IDF Chief of Staff typically serves a three-year term, with a possible one-year extension. The last Chief of Staff to leave before completing the term was Lt.-Gen. Dan Halutz in 2007, following the Second Lebanon War. There are increasing demands for an independent commission to investigate political and military failures, which would have the authority to summon witnesses and gather evidence. However, Prime Minister Netanyahu and his coalition believe such a commission should be established only after the war.
