Eoin Morgan Supports Jos Buttler and Matthew Mott Despite World Cup Losses

London [UK], July 16: England’s former World Cup-winning captain, Eoin Morgan, has expressed his support for current white-ball captain Jos Buttler and head coach Matthew Mott. Despite England’s recent struggles in the World Cup tournaments, Morgan believes they should continue in their roles.

World Cup Challenges

After winning the ICC T20 World Cup in 2022, the Buttler-Mott partnership faced difficulties. They failed to defend their 50-over World Cup title in 2023 in India and the T20 World Cup title in the West Indies and USA. In the 2023 World Cup, England lost six out of nine games, including matches against Afghanistan, India, and Australia, putting their direct qualification for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 at risk. Although they reached the semifinals of the T20 World Cup, they had to rely on Australia to beat Scotland to advance to the Super Eight.

Morgan’s Perspective

Speaking to Wisden Cricket Monthly, Morgan acknowledged the challenges faced by Buttler and Mott. He noted that they entered the tournament with low expectations and still managed to reach the semifinals, which should be recognized. Morgan emphasized that reaching the semifinals is not guaranteed, as seen with teams like Australia and New Zealand failing to advance.

Morgan also highlighted the positive impact of adding legendary England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff and former West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard to the team’s backroom staff. He believes that despite only beating the West Indies among Full Member nations in the T20 World Cup, Buttler and Mott should remain in their positions due to the lack of obvious replacements and the potential for growth.

Future Changes

Morgan mentioned that England’s white-ball set-up might undergo changes, with veterans like Moeen Ali, Chris Jordan, and Jonny Bairstow possibly being replaced by younger talent. He identified Phil Salt and Harry Brook as key players for the future. Morgan stressed the importance of having experienced players who can handle the pressures of the latter stages of tournaments.

Upcoming Matches

England’s next white-ball assignment will be a series against Australia in September, featuring three T20Is and five ODIs.
