Elephant Tragedies in Chhattisgarh
Arrest in Balrampur
In Balrampur, Chhattisgarh, an individual was arrested by the forest department in connection with the death of an elephant. Nikhil Saxena, a Forest Department Ranger, reported that the elephant died from an electric shock. The forest team found bamboo poles, pegs, and open GI wires at the scene. A group of nine elephants had wandered from Wadrafnagar to Manikpur, and one got separated, dying after being trapped in a live wire set up by the accused to protect his paddy crop. The accused, from Murka village, was arrested, and an FIR was filed under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.
Injury in Gariaband
In another incident, an elephant calf was injured in a suspected bomb explosion in the Udanti-Sitanadi Tiger Reserve, Gariaband district. Varun Jain, Deputy Director of the reserve, stated that a team of doctors and a bomb squad were called from Raipur. Blood traces led the Anti-Poaching team to find an injured calf, possibly hurt by a ‘potash bomb’ found nearby. The calf, aged 5-6 years, had injuries on its legs and mouth.
