An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 struck parts of Pakistan, mainly Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). The epicenter was located in the Hindu Kush Region in Afghanistan, with a depth of 215 kilometers.

The earthquake occurred on August 29, 2024, at 10:57 PST. The PMD reported the coordinates as 36.53 N latitude and 71.31 E longitude. Tremors were felt in various cities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Mardan, Malakand, Hangu, Buner, Shangla, Dir, and Charsadda. The quake also jolted Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Lahore.

Previous Earthquakes

Earlier on the same day, a 5.7 magnitude earthquake hit Afghanistan, as reported by the National Center for Seismology. This quake had a depth of 255 kilometers and was located at 36.51 N latitude and 71.12 E longitude. On August 16, 2024, another earthquake of 4.8 magnitude was recorded in Afghanistan, with a depth of 130 kilometers.

For the August 16 earthquake, the National Center for Seismology posted, “EQ of M: 4.8, On: 16/08/2024 06:35:16 IST, Lat: 37.09 N, Long: 71.17 E, Depth: 130 Km, Location: Afghanistan.”
