EAM S Jaishankar Discusses Bangladesh Situation with UK’s David Lammy Amid Sheikh Hasina’s Uncertain Future

New Delhi, India – External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar received a call from UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy on Thursday. They discussed the current situation in Bangladesh and West Asia.

Jaishankar shared on X, “Received a call from UK Foreign Secretary @DavidLammy today. Discussed the situation in Bangladesh and West Asia.”

Bangladesh is experiencing political turmoil following former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation on August 5. She has come to India amidst growing protests, mainly led by students demanding an end to the quota system for government jobs. These protests have expanded into broader anti-government demonstrations.

Sheikh Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, stated that his mother has not decided whether to seek asylum in the United States or the United Kingdom, calling such reports “rumours.” He mentioned that she will stay in Delhi for a while, accompanied by his sister who lives there.

Meanwhile, an interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus is set to take the oath. Bangladesh Army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman announced that the ceremony would likely be held at 8:00 pm local time, with around 400 dignitaries expected to attend.
