Dr. Sandip Ghosh Suspended Amid Investigation into Trainee Doctor’s Tragic Death at RG Kar Medical College
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) in Kolkata has suspended Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, amid a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor earlier this month.
IMA’s Decision
The IMA’s decision came after a committee, led by IMA national president Dr. RV Asokan, reviewed the case and the subsequent developments at the college. The committee found that Dr. Ghosh had mishandled the situation and lacked empathy in dealing with the victim’s parents.
The IMA Bengal state branch and other doctor associations demanded action against Dr. Ghosh, citing the disrepute he brought to the profession. Consequently, the IMA’s disciplinary committee unanimously decided to suspend Dr. Ghosh’s membership.
CBI Investigation
On August 26, the CBI conducted a second round of polygraph tests on Dr. Ghosh as part of their investigation. The investigation was ordered by the Calcutta High Court, which has given the CBI three weeks to submit a progress report by September 17.
Security Measures
Earlier this month, the Supreme Court ordered the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to take over the security of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital while hearing the case. The trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of the college on August 9.
