Dr. Sandip Ghosh Investigated by CBI for Financial Misconduct at RG Kar Medical College
On August 24, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, arrived at the CBI Special Crime Branch in Kolkata. The Kolkata Police confirmed that all documents related to the alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar have been handed over to the CBI by the Special Investigation Team (SIT), as per court orders.
On Friday, the Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation of financial irregularities involving Dr. Ghosh to the CBI. The court also permitted the CBI to conduct a polygraph test on Dr. Ghosh and five others, including four doctors and one civic volunteer. This decision followed a petition by Akhtar Ali, the former deputy superintendent of the hospital, accusing Dr. Ghosh of financial misconduct and unethical practices.
The CBI is also investigating the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the hospital. The court has given the CBI three weeks to submit a progress report on the investigation, due on September 17.
In a separate case, Sanjay Roy, the main accused in the rape and murder of the trainee doctor, was remanded to 14 days of judicial custody by the Sealdah Court. His custody will continue until September 6, 2024, under CBI supervision.
Earlier, the Supreme Court ordered the security of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to be handed over to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) amid ongoing protests in West Bengal. The CISF deployment aims to strengthen security and maintain public order. The trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of the hospital on August 9.
