Doctors Protest Nationwide After Woman Doctor’s Tragic Death in Kolkata

In Jaipur, Rajasthan, doctors and medical students from Sawai Man Singh Medical College protested against the sexual assault and murder of a woman post-graduate trainee (PGT) doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has called for a nationwide shutdown of OPD services starting Tuesday in response to the incident.

Dr. Saket Speaks Out

Dr. Saket from Sawai Man Singh Medical College expressed concerns about the delay in capturing the culprits. He mentioned, “Common people might feel that since doctors are protesting, patients could be suffering and we are being cruel but this incident happened on August 8 and this protest did not start before August 12. 4 days are enough for any govt to capture culprits in such a big incident.”

He also suggested that the ruling government might be protecting the real culprits, as only one person has been arrested, which he believes is insufficient given the post-mortem report. Dr. Saket called for a CBI probe and criticized the transfer of the college principal instead of his suspension.

Safety Concerns for Doctors

Dr. Saket highlighted past incidents where on-duty doctors were mistreated by patient attendants. He demanded the enforcement of the Central Protection Act, which was introduced during COVID but later canceled. He questioned why no action is taken when doctors are attacked, unlike other professionals such as lawyers or police officers.

Protests at AIIMS Delhi

Doctors and medical students also protested at AIIMS Delhi. Dr. Indra Shekhar Prasad, President of the Resident Doctors Association at AIIMS Delhi, emphasized the seriousness of the incident and the need for a CBI probe. He stated, “This is such a serious incident. A woman who was on duty was sexually assaulted and murdered brutally. If such incidents happen at workplaces, how will the women work? We have several demands regarding safety concerns. We want a CBI probe into this, till then we will continue our protest.”

IMA’s Demand for Inquiry

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has written to Union Minister JP Nadda, demanding a detailed inquiry into the conditions that enabled the crime and steps to improve the safety of doctors, especially women, in the workplace.

The tragic incident occurred on August 9, when the post-graduate trainee doctor was found raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
