Background of the Crisis
Canadian security expert Joe Adam George has commented on the ongoing diplomatic tensions between India and Canada, stating that the crisis began long before the recent expulsion of diplomats. The relationship between the two countries deteriorated after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged in Parliament that India was involved in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India has denied these allegations, calling them “absurd” and “motivated,” and accused Canada of harboring extremist elements.

George explained that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has been investigating various criminal activities in Canada for several years, which included threats to the South Asian community. Earlier this year, the RCMP formed a multi-disciplinary team to further investigate these crimes. During these investigations, they allegedly found involvement of Indian diplomats, including High Commissioner Sanjay Verma, in certain activities. This led to further actions, including attempts by RCMP Deputy Commissioner Mark Flynn to meet with Indian law enforcement, which were refused.
Escalation of Diplomatic Actions
The situation escalated when Canada labeled Sanjay Verma and other diplomats as “persons of interest” in Nijjar’s death investigation. In response, India expelled six Canadian diplomats and withdrew its High Commissioner to Canada, citing unacceptable targeting of its diplomats. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs expressed concerns over the safety of its officials in Canada.
