Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has taken action following reports of an increase in illegal immigrants in the city. He has instructed the police to be extra vigilant and conduct a month-long drive to identify these individuals.

The principal secretary of the Delhi LG has communicated with the Chief Secretary, Police Commissioner, Commissioner MCD, and Chairman NDMC, expressing concerns about illegal immigrants obtaining identity documents like Aadhar and Election Identity Cards through fake means. This could potentially grant them the right to vote, which is a significant democratic right in India.

The Chief Secretary has been advised to instruct District Magistrates to exercise extra caution during the verification of identity document applications. Additionally, the Police Commissioner has been asked to ensure field-level officials are vigilant, especially during inspections of squatters on roadsides and vacant government land.

The Delhi Police will conduct a special month-long drive to identify illegal immigrants and will work in coordination with central agencies to take further action. All government agencies have been reminded to prevent unauthorized occupation of public places, as directed by the Supreme Court of India.
