Delhi High Court Reviews Defamation Case Between Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand and Govindanand Saraswati
The Delhi High Court has issued a notice regarding an interim injunction application in a civil defamation suit filed by Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati against Govindanand Saraswati. The bench, led by Justice Navin Chawla, emphasized that saints should focus on their actions rather than legal battles to establish respect and reputation.
Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati filed the suit based on accusations from Govindanand Saraswati, who called him a ‘fake baba’ and alleged he had political support from the Indian National Congress Party. Govindanand also accused Avimukteshwaranand of serious criminal activities, including kidnapping and stealing Rs 7000 crore worth of gold.
The court observed that a saint’s true standing is determined by conduct and character, not legal disputes. The next hearing is scheduled for August 29, with no temporary injunction granted until both parties are heard.
Avimukteshwaranand’s lawyer argued that Govindanand’s statements were damaging and false, potentially substantiating a defamation claim. The lawyer clarified that the only relevant case against Avimukteshwaranand was withdrawn by the Yogi Adityanath government.
