Delhi Court Releases Jose Inacio Cota on Bail in London Pub Rape Case

A Delhi court has ordered the release of Jose Inacio Cota, who is accused in the 2017 London Pub Rape case, after the Delhi High Court granted him interim bail for six months. The court’s decision came after considering another pending case against him in Goa.

Details of the Bail

Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma of the Delhi High Court granted interim bail to Cota on July 10. The bail was granted without delving into the merits of the case, as the extradition order had already been challenged by Cota in 2023.

Cota’s petition for bail was filed by advocates Arpit Batra and Nihal P Kamat under Section 439 Cr.P.C., read with Section 25 of the Extradition Act. The Central Government’s counsel argued that extradition is not possible until the criminal case in Goa is resolved.

Conditions of the Bail

The High Court set strict conditions for Cota’s bail:

  • He must furnish a personal bond of Rs one lakh with a similar amount of surety.
  • He must surrender his passport.
  • He must report to the local police station in Goa every Friday at 05:00 PM.
  • He must remain within the territory of Goa and cannot leave the state without informing the concerned court.
  • He cannot travel abroad without permission from the trial courts in New Delhi.
