Delhi Court Dismisses Bail Pleas of BRS Leader K. Kavitha and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal in Excise Policy Case
K. Kavitha’s Bail Plea Dismissed
On Monday, a court in Delhi dismissed the default bail petition of BRS Leader K. Kavitha. She had sought default bail in the Delhi Excise Policy CBI case. Special Judge Kaveri Baweja of the Rouse Avenue court dismissed the plea following her withdrawal request. Kavitha’s counsel decided not to press the bail application, leading to its withdrawal.
K. Kavitha had submitted the bail plea because the CBI failed to file a complete charge sheet within the mandatory 60-day period. She was arrested by the CBI on April 11 and by the Enforcement Directorate on March 15. The CBI filed a charge sheet against her on June 6, which the court has acknowledged.
Arvind Kejriwal’s Bail Plea Dismissed
On the same day, the Delhi High Court dismissed Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s plea challenging his arrest by the CBI in the Excise Policy case. The court stated that Kejriwal’s arrest was justified. The court disposed of the bail application, allowing Kejriwal to approach the trial court for further relief.
During the hearing, CBI’s Special Counsel DP Singh argued that Kejriwal was the central figure in the excise policy scam. The CBI claimed that Kejriwal signed and circulated the excise policy during the COVID-19 pandemic. They also traced Rs 44 crores related to the case, which was sent to Goa.
Senior Advocate Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Kejriwal, argued that the case was an “insurance arrest” and pointed out that Kejriwal had been granted bail thrice in the ED case. He emphasized that the policy was the result of extensive deliberation and inter-ministerial committees.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who is also the National Convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party, approached the Delhi High Court seeking regular bail, claiming persecution and harassment.
