Delhi CM Atishi Pushes for Permanent Bus Marshals for Women’s Safety

Delhi Government Moves to Reinstate Bus Marshals

The Delhi government has taken a significant step to enhance the safety of women and elderly people by passing a proposal to reinstate 10,000 bus marshals. This decision was announced by Chief Minister Atishi during a joint press conference with Delhi Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj.

Proposal for Permanent Appointments

The proposal, which aims to make these appointments permanent, will be sent to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena. CM Atishi emphasized the importance of having bus marshals to ensure safety, especially in the absence of a permanent policy. The Delhi government has decided to reinstate the marshals on an ‘as-is, where-is basis’ until a permanent policy is established.

Efforts for Women’s Safety

Under the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal, the Delhi government has been proactive in ensuring women’s safety by installing CCTV cameras and deploying bus marshals since 2015. However, since 2023, there have been challenges, including withheld salaries and the removal of marshals in October 2023.

Support for Bus Marshals

CM Atishi highlighted the support from AAP leaders for the protesting bus marshals, who have been advocating for their reinstatement. The absence of marshals has raised concerns about safety, prompting the government to act swiftly.

Awaiting Approval

The proposal is now awaiting approval from the Lieutenant Governor, and the Delhi government hopes for a positive response to ensure the continued safety of women and elders in the city.
