Debate Over Waqf Bill: Owaisi, Hindu Groups, and Political Tensions

In New Delhi, members from Hindu organizations shared their views with the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Waqf Bill. AIMIM leader Assadudin Owaisi had previously requested the committee’s chairman, Jagdambika Pal, to withdraw invitations to Sanatan Sanstha and Hindu Janjagruti Samiti. Presenters included Mahant Sudhirdas Maharaj, advocates Vishnu Shankar Jain and Ashwini Upadhyay, and others. Opposition members objected to the inclusion of non-Muslim representatives, arguing it was irrelevant to the Waqf Bill.

Mahant Sudhirdas Maharaj called for protection of Hindu community lands, while Vishnu Shankar Jain suggested legal changes. Ashwini Upadhyay criticized the Wakf Act 1995 as unconstitutional, advocating for a secular law. Owaisi expressed disappointment over the invitations, labeling the organizations as extremist.

During the JPC meeting, opposition MPs walked out following allegations by Anwar Manippady, former Karnataka State Minorities Commission Chairman, against the Karnataka Government and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. MPs claimed Manippady’s remarks were politically motivated and irrelevant to the Waqf Bill discussion.

Manippady accused Congress leaders of mismanaging Waqf properties, presenting evidence of corruption. He urged the Muslim community to support amendments to prevent fraud. The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, aims to introduce reforms like digitization and transparency. The committee is to report to the Lok Sabha by the next parliament session.
