Congress Leaders Turn Independent in Pune Elections
In Pune, Maharashtra, three senior Congress leaders, Aba Bagul, Kamal Vyavhare, and Manish Anand, have decided to contest the upcoming assembly elections as independent candidates. This decision comes after dissatisfaction with the seat-sharing arrangements within the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance.
Key Candidates and Constituencies
Kamal Vyavhare, the first woman mayor of Pune, will contest from the Kasba Assembly constituency. Manish Anand will run from Shivaji Nagar, and Aba Bagul will contest from the Parvati Assembly seat. Notably, the Kasba and Shivaji Nagar seats were allocated to Congress candidates Ravindra Dhangekar and Datta Bahirat, respectively, while the Parvati seat was given to NCP’s Ashwini Kadam.
Reasons for Going Independent
Aba Bagul, a long-time councillor in Pune, expressed his concerns about Congress losing ground due to the alliance with Shiv Sena and the seat-sharing with NCP. He emphasized the need to strengthen Congress and stop BJP’s influence. Kamal Vyavhare, a senior party worker since 1987, decided to go independent after being denied an MLA ticket for the Kasba constituency. Manish Anand, who has been with Congress since 2010, also chose to run independently after being denied a ticket for Shivaji Nagar.
