Congress Leader Pawan Khera Calls for Investigation into Rising Crimes Against Women
New Delhi, August 19: Congress leader Pawan Khera has called for an investigation and discussion on the increasing crimes against women over the past ten years, based on National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data. His statement comes amid nationwide protests following the murder and alleged sexual assault of a female trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.
The incident has shocked the nation, with Khera highlighting other recent cases, including the alleged sexual assault of a woman resident doctor at Sion Hospital in Mumbai by a drunk patient on August 18 and an earlier case on a bus in Dehradun. Khera expressed hope that all accused would be arrested soon.
The parents of the murdered Kolkata doctor have raised questions about the hospital’s handling of the case. The mother of the deceased doctor criticized the police and accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of trying to stop the protests. She recounted the hospital’s initial claim that her daughter had committed suicide and described the injuries found on her daughter’s body.
Doctors have protested in various states, including Kolkata, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi. The case has been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) following an order from the Calcutta High Court. On August 14, the protest site and hospital campus at RG Kar were vandalized by a mob, leading to the imposition of Section 163 of the BNSS around the hospital for seven days starting August 18 to maintain law and order.
