Complaint Filed Against Muhammad Yunus at ICC
In Dhaka, Bangladesh, a significant legal action has been initiated against Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, and 61 others. Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury, a leader of the Awami League and former Mayor of Sylhet, lodged the complaint at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Netherlands under Article 15 of the Rome Statute.
Allegations of Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity
Chowdhury accused Yunus and his associates of committing genocide and crimes against humanity from August 5th to 8th, targeting members of the Awami League, Hindus, Christians, Buddhists, and the police force in Bangladesh. He shared this information in a video message on the Awami League’s Facebook page, stating that all evidence has been submitted to the ICC.
Details of the Complaint
The complaint includes 800 pages of documents and names all members of Yunus’s cabinet and student leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Alliance. Plans are underway to file 15,000 more complaints at the ICC, with affected individuals submitting them one by one.
Background of the Conflict
In Chittagong, a clash occurred between the Hindu community and law enforcement over a Facebook post criticizing ISKCON, leading to a police and army operation on November 5th. India condemned these attacks, warning they could increase community tensions.
Political Upheaval
On August 5th, a student-led movement resulted in the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after protests and clashes that resulted in over 600 deaths. Hasina fled to India, and an interim government led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus was established.
