Clashes in Bangladesh: Students Protest Against Former PM Sheikh Hasina
In Bangladesh's Gazipur district, clashes erupted during a student-led "Bulldozer Program" against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Around 15 students were injured and are receiving treatment. The conflict began when locals warned of robbers as students approached the home of Liberation War Affairs Minister Mozammel Haq. Central leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement have arrived to protest the attacks on students.
Under the "Bulldozer Program," properties of Awami League leaders, including former President Abdul Hamid and former Army Chief Moeen U Ahmed, were attacked. Murals and busts of Bangladesh's founding leader, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, were also vandalized. The Awami League office in Kishoreganj was destroyed, and Abdul Hamid's residence was set on fire.
Bangladesh's Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus urged citizens to restore law and order and prevent further attacks on properties linked to Sheikh Hasina and Awami League politicians. He emphasized the importance of respecting the rule of law to differentiate the new Bangladesh from the old regime under Hasina. Yunus called for peaceful efforts to support positive changes and urged those who overthrew Hasina's government to uphold civil and human rights.
The government is working with security forces to maintain order and protect citizens. Any attempts to destabilize the country will be met with strict action. The Chief Adviser's press wing highlighted the damage caused by Hasina's regime and stressed the importance of maintaining moral high ground to avoid giving the regime international attention.
