Chief Justice DY Chandrachud Stops Morning Walks Due to Delhi’s Air Pollution

In New Delhi, the Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, has expressed concerns over the increasing air pollution levels in the city. He mentioned that he has ceased his morning walks following his doctor’s advice due to the poor air quality, which poses respiratory risks.

During an informal chat with journalists at the Supreme Court, Justice Chandrachud highlighted the alarming pollution levels. He also announced a change in the requirements for journalists covering the Supreme Court, stating that a law degree is no longer necessary. This announcement was made during a pre-Diwali event at the Supreme Court.

Justice Chandrachud is scheduled to retire on November 10. Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality has deteriorated to a ‘very poor’ level, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 385 recorded recently, as reported by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM).

Experts have identified stubble burning as a significant contributor to the pollution, although it is not the sole cause. Stubble burning involves burning crop residues, which releases harmful smoke into the air. Farmers often resort to this practice due to the short interval between harvests and the lack of alternative solutions.
